Starting occupational therapy for the first time can feel uncertain. Many clients arrive without a clear picture of what the session will involve, or worry that they need to prepare something in advance. The good news is that a first appointment is straightforward, and understanding the process ahead of time can make it much easier to feel comfortable.
Before the appointment
Once a referral has been received, our team will contact you to arrange a time that suits you. Appointments can take place in a clinic setting, in your home, or in some cases over telehealth, depending on your needs and funding arrangements.
You do not need to prepare a detailed history or bring extensive documentation. It helps to have any relevant medical letters or plan details on hand, but the occupational therapist will guide the conversation and ask the right questions.
What happens during the first session
The first appointment is mostly about listening and understanding. The occupational therapist will spend time learning about your daily routine, your goals, and the challenges you are facing. This might include questions about how you manage tasks at home, how you get around, how you sleep, and what activities matter most to you.
Depending on the reason for referral, the session may also include a physical or functional assessment. This could involve observing how you move, how you complete a task like getting dressed or preparing a meal, or how you manage stairs and other parts of your home.
If the appointment relates to home modifications, the occupational therapist may walk through your home with you, noting areas that could pose a risk or limit your independence. If it relates to a return to work following injury, the conversation will focus more on your work tasks, physical demands, and any barriers you are facing.
Building a plan together
By the end of the first appointment, most clients have a much clearer sense of what comes next. The occupational therapist will begin forming a plan based on what was discussed, and will explain any further assessments, equipment recommendations, or reports that might be needed.
You have time to consider the next steps
You will not be expected to make decisions on the spot. Occupational therapy works best as an ongoing conversation, and the first session is really just the starting point for building a plan around your goals.
A judgement free space
Many people feel nervous before their first appointment, particularly if they are worried about losing independence or being told what they cannot do. In practice, occupational therapy is about the opposite. The focus is always on what will help you do more of what matters to you, safely and with confidence.
